Pelican Elementary’s playground serves 260 students and is in need of updating due to age and lack of inclusivity. Several playground structures have been lovingly used for over 20 years. Unfortunately, these older structures have cracks, rust, and exposed metal edges that are safety hazards. For example, one slide is no longer usable due to a significant crack that could cause physical harm; and replacement parts are obsolete due to age. It currently is blocked from student use by orange safety cones.
Another concern is the lack of inclusive, ADA-compliant equipment. Pelican students with complex needs, mobility limitations, or sensory impairments are often excluded from play with able-bodied, neurotypical peers who can openly access any playground structure. The design of playground structures has evolved over the last decade to be universally accessible for all children. Adding universally-accessible equipment builds a sense of safety, belonging, and community for all of our learners.
Knowing that some of Pelican’s playground structures have additional years in their life cycle, the proposal includes stages of development so that these structures can be replaced over time without disrupting newer, existing pieces of equipment.
Finally, Pelican would like to update the field to include a soccer area with goals/nets, updated baseball diamond and equipment, and portable football posts.
Proposal Equipment = $300,000-325,000 Grounds = $100,000
Total = $400,000-425,000
